Identity By Design

Place identity through historical and cultural meaning is increasingly recognized as a way to draw upon and developing the richness of the urban fabric. But just whose culture is this? Is there a danger of Urban development too rooted in the past. Using the City of Bristol’s remodeling of its ‘Centre’ as a case study, this paper examines the tension in Place Identity as part of the design process.

Drivers of Urban Dynamism

The “Informational” or “Post Industrial” city is the latest and perhaps the most radical force for transformation to occur on the urban form since the Industrial Revolution. Is the emerging intensification of the urban form the first real expression of the ‘information city’ or actually a reaction against it? This paper examines the drivers and features of intensification that directly relate and interact with the features of the “information city” from a Western perspective.
